Staff Augmentation vs.
a Dedicated Team.

They sound similar. The experience of working with them is very different. Here's how to pick.

// engagement models

Both involve outside engineers. The similarity ends there.

When organizations need engineering capacity, two models come up most often: staff augmentation and a dedicated development team.

Both involve outside engineers. Both cost money. The similarity ends there - and understanding which model fits your situation is worth getting right before you sign anything.

// what each one is

What staff augmentation is

Individual engineers who join your team under your direction and management.

  • Firm: sourcing, vetting, onboarding, HR, payroll, backfill
  • You: day-to-day management & technical direction
  • They work in your process, tools, and sprint cycles
  • Essentially employees for the engagement's duration

What a dedicated team is

An external team - its own PM, lead, and engineers - that owns a defined scope.

  • Firm: team management, delivery, technical decisions, reporting
  • You: requirements, approvals, feedback, business decisions
  • Operates as a semi-autonomous unit
  • You define the outcome; they figure out how to get there

Rented hands vs
owned outcomes.

The label matters less than who owns the result.

// the decision

Which model fits your situation.

The right model depends on what you're actually trying to solve - including the hybrid most mature engagements land on.

Most common

Staff Augmentation

// you own delivery

Engineers who plug into your team under your management.

  • You have strong internal engineering leadership
  • The work integrates closely with existing systems
  • You need specific skills, not team capacity
  • You want control over individuals
  • Short-term capacity, not a long-term partnership

Best when you have the management capacity and need hands, not a team.

Most common

Hybrid

// the mature middle

A dedicated team owns the build; your team handles adjacent systems.

  • Neither model fits cleanly on its own
  • The integration points between teams are well-defined
  • Communication is deliberately structured from the start

Best when the build is ours but the internal-knowledge pieces are yours.

// ask your vendor

The questions to ask your vendor.

Before you sign, the answers to these tell you which model you're really getting.

For staff augmentation:

  • Who manages the augmented engineers day-to-day? (If the answer is "you," make sure you have the capacity.)
  • What's the backfill process if an engineer doesn't work out?
  • What's the notice period to end the engagement?

For a dedicated team:

  • Who is the PM / technical lead, specifically?
  • How do you report progress - what do I see, and how often?
  • What happens when the scope changes?
  • How are bugs handled post-launch?

// how we work

How Inventive works.

We offer both models. Most of our clients start with a conversation about what they're trying to achieve and which model fits - rather than starting with a model and forcing the work into it.

If you're not sure which model fits, that's a good reason to have that conversation before you're in a decision-making rush.

ready when you are

Not sure which model fits?

Tell us what you're trying to achieve. We'll tell you honestly whether staff augmentation, a dedicated team, or a hybrid makes the most sense - before you commit to one.
