Operational software that predates modern cloud architecture, running on hardware the manufacturer stopped making a decade ago - code everybody is afraid to look at directly. The problem isn't that these systems are old; it's that they work. Sort of. In an industry where downtime carries a specific dollar figure per hour, you don't get to take production offline for a ground-up rebuild. Modernization has to be incremental, surgical, and non-disruptive.
Someone fills out a paper form in the field. Someone photographs it. Someone enters it into Excel. Someone emails the spreadsheet to someone who enters it into another system. The data exists - eventually, sort of - but by the time it reaches a decision-maker it's already too late to be useful and too mangled to be reliable. The data is there. Making it usable is the engineering problem.
Directional drilling hardware. MWD systems. Field sensors. Pressure monitors. Physical equipment built by people who cared a lot about the equipment and maybe less about its data. Connecting that hardware to modern digital systems requires understanding both ends of the wire - the full stack of what happens when a sensor in the field needs to put data in a dashboard in Houston. That requires engineers who've actually done it before.
You don't get a maintenance window that lasts six months. You don't get to tell operations the system will be unavailable while the project completes. The wells don't pause. The field doesn't take holidays. The software has to improve without interrupting the work it's enabling - a level of care and precision a lot of development teams aren't wired for. We are.
