Work orders, dispatch logs, inspection checklists - all on clipboards, all manually entered somewhere later. If at all. The data exists in theory; in practice it's a pile of paper in someone's truck that will never make it into a system that can use it. This is how operations stay slow - not because anyone wants them slow, but because nobody built the software to match how the work actually happens in the field.
The ERP is sacred. It's also fifteen years old, poorly documented, and the vendor is no longer especially interested in helping. Getting modern software to talk to it requires understanding both ends of the conversation - and having the patience to make them cooperate. What shops need is a team that's actually been inside it, not one that confidently promises to "integrate with your existing systems" from the safety of a proposal deck.
Where are the trucks? Who has the next job? What's the status on that call from three hours ago? When the answer requires a phone call - and it usually does - that's a solvable software problem. Dispatch systems need to work when drivers are on the side of a highway at 2am, when the network is bad, when the person entering data hasn't had coffee yet. Fragile tools that only behave in ideal conditions aren't tools. They're liabilities dressed up in nice UI.
You can't take the dispatch system offline to rebuild it. The trucks still have to run. The jobs still have to get scheduled. Every modernization project in this space has to account for the fact that the business doesn't pause for software development - and any system that requires a clean cutover and a week of training is going to fail before it gets to production.
